Artist Talks/presentations:
PechaKucha Vol.1 (May 2018) Venue: Transition, Chelmsford. Link: https://www.pechakucha.org/users/tayo-jones
In May, I was invited to take part in a one-night event, the PechaKucha Volume 1 Chelmsford (Japanese for chit-chat). people from various walks of life are invited to talk about something they are very passionate about in front of a live audience. Various people came up and talked about their careers in culinary business, self-employment, working with people suffering from dementia and portrait painting. We each submitted 20 images that relate to our professions/hobbies and talked about each image for 20 seconds, before the next image comes up. The presentations were very fast paced. I talked about my art practice, and presented 20 pieces of artwork. The presentation was similar to the talk I gave to the foundation students, only this time it was in front of a crowd of adults who have professions in a variety of fields. I was nervous, but everyone was very supportive and congratulated me afterwards. I was a great experience for me and I hope to take part in another PechaKucha presentation event in the future.
Presentation (January 2018) Venue: Foundation studio, University for the creative Arts, Farnham
Volunteer work:
Gallery assistant: 2017 venue: Modern Art Oxford
During the summer, I did volunteer work at the Modern Art Gallery in Oxford. Unlike my one day position as a assistant curator, I went in every week and kept an eye on the exhibitions, making sure no one touches the artwork or crosses the barrier line. I also welcomed visitors to the gallery, and gave them guides for each of the exhibition rooms. I even got to talk to some of the visitors, where we talked about our favourite pieces of work from one of the exhibitions. The experience helped further my knowledge of how an art gallery runs an exhibition, how to talk to visitors and how to set up my own exhibition space.
Assistant curator: 2016 venue: Sarah Wiseman Gallery, Summertown, Oxford
As part of my fine art course, I went to work in an art gallery during the summer. For one day, I worked at the Sarah Wiseman art gallery in Summer Town, where I helped the curator take down the art from the summer exhibition, and install the art for the autumn exhibition. I was very careful taking down the art, as not to damage it, and I was just as careful putting up the new displays. I also arranged each of the pieces in a professional and respectable manner. The experience was welcomed, and gave me some insight as to how to set up my own exhibitions once I graduate.
